"Les Bettières" Via Ferrata

Consisting of three consecutive sections of increasing difficulty, the first section (PD) allows beginners to learn belaying techniques and is not difficult, especially since an early escape route is marked for them. Not too steep, not too many rungs, with ropes running the entire length—but watch out for falling small rocks and flying dirt.

The second section (AD) begins with a beautiful 50-meter vertical climb that offers a view of the valley below. An exposed ridge follows, continuing with a second vertical section, and ending with a Nepalese bridge whose exit is “slightly” overhanging! A second escape route allows you to descend directly back into the valley. Climbing, rungs, and ropes—and still more small rocks!

The third and final section (D) runs at an angle for about fifteen meters; the rest of the route, which is unremarkable, leads to the plateau, where you rejoin the “Les Lanches – Le Mont Pourri” trail, heading left toward “Les Lanches.” Starting this year (2002), there’s another way to reach the plateau: turn left at the top of the via; a few cables followed by a small ladder lead to a steep trail that takes you directly back to the parking lot.

Times are provided as a guide based on the following criteria: a pair of D+ level climbers, of average age (40 years old), during off-peak periods.

Via ferrata: 1st section + 40 min
Return: 30 min

3rd section:
Approach: 0 min from the 2nd section
Via ferrata: 2nd section + 20 min
Return: 50 min

APPROACH / ROAD ACCESS
Near the hamlet of Les Bettières in Peisey Nancroix. Signs for the via ferrata are located 50 meters from the Rosuel refuge.

Difficulty levels:
F (= Easy): Introduction to via ferrata.
PD (= Slightly Difficult): Children and beginners.
AD (= Fairly Difficult) For beginners with a qualified guide.
D (= Difficult): For experienced climbers.
TD (= Very Difficult): Physically demanding for experienced climbers with strong upper body strength.
ED (= Extremely Difficult): Very physically demanding for experienced climbers with exceptional upper body strength.
