'Quand la science s’enrichit de regards d’artistes - Le cas vallées chamoniardes, et bien au-delà' (When science is enriched by artists' perspectives - The case of the Chamonix valleys and far beyond) By Robert Moutard - PhD in geography
Glacial melt and retreat are the most widely recognised signs of global warming in the Alpine landscape, in complete contrast to what occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Several decades before photographers came along, the painters and engravers of the time showed us through their work what the mountain valleys looked like at the end of the Little Ice Age.
Their images therefore combine artistic value with a recognized scientific interest.
It is also thanks to these internationally-renowned artists, such as Turner, Linck and Viollet-Le-Duc - to name but a few – that Chamonix has acquired worldwide fame as a tourist destination.
This renown has imbued a new mental image of the mountains that extends beyond the Chamonix school of thought.
