Do you love adrenalin... a little, a lot, madly? Then take to the downhill mountain bike trails at the Bike Park in La Plagne, in the Northern Alps!
12 trails ranging from green (easy/beginner) to black (very difficult/expert) are groomed with passion all summer long by a team of bike patrols* who love big suspension bikes. Warm up your arms and shoulders: it's going to sting (and you're going to want more)!
*The bike patrols are the professionals in charge of maintaining the Bike Park trails and ensuring riders' safety.
By the way... what's a Bike Park?
A Bike Park is simply an area set aside for mountain biking. At La Plagne, the Bike Park takes the form of 12 downhill mountain bike trails all levels, served by three lifts: the Colorado chairlift (which gives its name to the Colorado Bike Park), the Bergerie chairlift (closed this summer and replaced by the Funiplagne) and the Colosses chairlift.
Visit downhill mountain biking is a sensational activity that combines the WAOUH and YOUHOU effects! Whatever your level, you'll feel a gentle adrenaline rush as you pick up speed, and every time you have to negotiate an "obstacle": a series of small bumps, banked turns where you learn to angle, wooden footbridges, gaps (jumps with an empty space in the middle) or drops (jumps from a high point to a low point).
Riding in a Bike Park requires special equipment: a full-suspension bike (more on that later), as well as full-body protection (full-face helmet with chin guard, back protector, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves, shin guards, etc.).
The downhill mountain bike trails are reserved exclusively for mountain biking. You won't come across any pedestrians. Be careful, however, at intersections and when approaching hiking trails...

Do you like mountain biking? Do you love adrenalin? Why not take a downhill mountain biking course with an instructor?
The Bike Park at La Plagne is particularly suitable for beginners, with its four green trails (easy level) and 5 blue trails (intermediate level).
Under the expert eye of your instructor, you'll learn the basics of downhill mountain biking: how to adopt the right position on your bike (spoiler: standing on your pedals, not sitting on the saddle, deliberately set very low...), how to brake effectively and at the right moment, how to choose your trajectory, take a banked turn, a small bump... and even how to hook your mountain bike to the chairlift (and then unhook it at the finish)!
Mountain bike schools in La Plagne offer half-day, full-day and even weekly DH courses. Perfect for building confidence and making rapid progress!
Downhill mountain biking courses are not just for beginners. Are you used to riding on blue or red trails? Your instructor will give you all the tips you need to gain fluidity and style from the top to the bottom of your favorite line.
No holds barred!
Are you used to putting your bike's suspension to the test on all types of DH trails? Do you enjoy riding on trails that demand precision and commitment? Here are three downhill tracks that should please you:
- A trail to set your sights on: the red Redskins track (difficult level), a concentration of banked turns (and jumps) over 1.4 km that will require a few rotations to fine-tune your trajectories and obtain the perfect (so satisfying!) flow.
- A track to take to the skies: the red Thunderbolt track (difficult level), with its many tables to work on your take-offs and recep'.
- A slope to send the heavy stuff : the black run X'trem Canyon (very difficult level), highly technical with numerous drops and gaps, and narrow, stony sections in the forest. THE most difficult track in the Bike Park!
Don't hesitate to ask the bike patrols for advice when you come across them with their shovels and picks in the area: they'll give you little "tips" as close to the terrain as possible (which bend has just been "cleaned", which table has recently been resurfaced...).
Have you "finished" all the downhill runs in the Bike Park? Then take a look at the 10 highly technical enduro trails! Among the 8 red-level (difficult) enduro runs , you'll want to try out the Dré'Val, one of the most beautiful runs in the area, with its 12 km length and 1100 m negative vertical drop. As for the black runs, the magnificent Praizes route in the Montchavin forest will delight fans of hairpin bends and "pif-paf"...
Which mountain bike to choose for riding in the Bike Park?
Forget immediately about the mountain bike you use for riding on forest trails! Or, worse yet, your superb gravel bike… To ride in the Bike Park, you must equip yourself with a downhill mountain bike. These big fully suspended bikes are specially designed to withstand shocks and absorb the impacts inherent to the discipline.
Because yes, downhill is anything but a peaceful ride… and that’s exactly why we love it! Terrain movements, series of bumps, jumps over a gap (a more or less deep empty space) or from a wooden bridge, banked turns, technical passages through rocks… Downhill mountain biking is a bumpy ride! And the double suspension is more than welcome to protect both the bike and your joints…

Good to know: at La Plagne, mountain biking is not only practiced on the downhill trails of the Bike Park. Want to tackle the enduro trails? Or the e-MTB routes for half a day or a full day? You will need to change your bike for more comfort on the climbs (a downhill mountain bike is heavy…).
Ask for advice from the mountain bike and e-MTB rental shops: they know the mountain biking trails around La Plagne and Champagny-en-Vanoise perfectly and will guide you towards the bike that best suits your desires (versatile enduro mountain bike, electric-assist mountain bike).
Map of the La Plagne Bike Park in the Northern Alps
The La Plagne Bike Park is concentrated around three mountain bike lifts accessible from Plagne Centre (Colorado and Bergerie chairlifts) and Plagne Bellecôte (Colosses chairlift). Bergerie chairlift closed this summer and replaced by Funiplagne.
Have you booked accommodation in another La Plagne village? Use the free shuttle service and inter-village lifts accessible to mountain bikes to reach the Bike Park's three chairlifts.
The Bike Park's downhill mountain bike trails are classified according to their level of difficulty:
- The 4 green trails are the easiest, suitable for beginners and children (depending on their motor development).
- The 5 blue trails are intermediate, ideal for progressing once you've mastered the green trails.
- The 2 red runs are difficult and are aimed at regular downhill mountain bikers.
- The black run is the most difficult in the mountain biking area. It's highly technical and physical (lots of slope, narrow trail, big jumps, etc.), making it a trail for expert downhill mountain bikers only!
Good to know: there's no equivalent level of difficulty between ski slopes and mountain bike trails. So, for example, you might be able to hurtle down a black ski slope in winter, but have a green mountain bike slope in summer. This is perfectly normal: the two disciplines (skiing and mountain biking) are completely different...
On the reverse side of the Bike Park downhill trails map, you'll find other MTB and VTTAE trails: enduro trails (more "natural", and therefore more technical, and sometimes with uphill sections) as well as VTTAE itineraries to explore by the day or half-day.
Also take a look at the E-Spots, these fun areas in the resort specially set up to learn how to handle your VTTAE before setting off on itineraries of several dozen kilometers. As well as VTTAE recharging pointsrecharging points, where you can charge the battery of your electrically-assisted mountain bike.
A final useful service on rainy days: wash stations to remove all traces of mud from your precious toy.

During this period, you can take the Bike Park's three lifts and ride on its 12 downhill trails in green, blue, red and black.
Good to know: the Bike Park at La Plagne culminates at 2300 m altitude (arrival point of the Colorado chairlift), which means that opening of the mountain bike trails are guaranteed to be open from the end of June, with no risk of snow on the trails (unlike high-altitude bike parks, where some snow remains until early summer).
Bike Park: several lift passes for mountain biking.
As in winter, to access the ski slopes, you'll need a lift pass to use the Bike Park's mountain bike lifts.
Depending on your level of ability and the length of your stay, you can choose a weekly, daily, half-day (3h) or even single-day pass!
Practical: your mountain bike pass also entitles you to use the lifts leading to the enduro mountain bike trails and certain VTTAE itineraries.
