Champagny in autumn

The end of the summer season has sounded and announces the arrival of the European Heritage Days: 17 and 18 September. This year the theme is sustainable heritage and Champagny en Vanoise is offering a guided tour for the occasion: an introduction to nature photography. The Church of Saint Sigismond and the Espace Glacialis are also opening their doors for you to discover them freely.

As autumn is coming, the leaves are starting to turn red, mushrooms are growing, the herds are going back down to the valley and the mild winter is gradually settling over the village.
Let's take advantage of this calm period to hike and enjoy nature. In October, Matthieu proposes two supervised outings in Champagny le Haut: an evening of stag bellowing and awareness of animal disturbance. If you want to put down your hiking boots, many activities are also possible: via ferrata, climbing, cani-hiking, horse riding, paragliding, wood carving workshops and wellness activities.

The Xplore Festival is coming to Champagny en Vanoise this year. It is a friendly event dedicated to mountain sports, activities and heritage which will offer in Champagny, at the end of October, short films in the cinema as well as demonstrations and initiations of dry tooling in the ice tower.

A village with extra spirit

Made up of hamlets with traditional buildings in wood and stone, Champagny-en-Vanoise became a small winter sports resort in 1971. You will love the charm of the village, its Baroque church and the little streets with a chapel and oratories. Here, the locals really know how to welcome guests. Furnished accommodation is proposed for rent, from studios to chalets sleeping 15 people, all with their own style of decoration. The owners offer their guests a special welcome, telling them about secret off-piste itineraries and the best places to eat in the village. It is not unusual to have a bottle of Savoie wine or a slice of Beaufort cheese awaiting you on arrival.

Red alert

For a fabulous ski experience, take either Verdons Sud or Verdons Nord chairlifts up to 2500 metres where you have a great view of Mont Blanc. This is the starting point of the Mont de La Guerre run. Set off on a descent of over 1300 metres without a ski lift in sight. There are no snow canons here, so the red run is open according to the snow conditions. You start with views of Mont Blanc and the Vanoise glaciers as you follow the ridge, then the run goes down through the fir trees. Less experienced skiers can take the path that winds down the mountain to Champagny en Vanoise at 1250 m.

The hospitality of the Champagnolais is also evident on the slopes. Several high altitude restaurants are run by the villagers, where local specialities and good humour are the order of the day. At La Rossa, on the terrace, taste the home-made desserts of Lionel and Sabrina, the owners, while enjoying the sun. Behind their bar, at Les Borseliers, Celine and Nicolas distribute well-filled cups and good words accompanied by home-made terrine. At the Roc des Blanchets, Arnaud cooks fresh and local products. And between 2 cross-country ski runs, you can push open the door of the Refuge du Bois in Champagny le Haut. In a setting worthy of a flea market, after a Savoyard crust, the challenge is to get through the enormous gourmet coffee.
